Biodiversity Flag 2021-2023
We are currently working towards our Fifth Green School Flag here in Scoil Mhuire Lacken. The theme for this flag is Biodiversity.

“Biodiversity is the huge variety and variation of life that surrounds us, from the tiniest bugs to the biggest whales in the sea”.
Maintaining a high level of diversity among plants, animals and all living things around us is essential in keeping the environment healthy and fit for human life.

Our aim is aim to improve biodiversity within the school grounds through the creation of a school garden where we will construct a new bug hotel, plant a range of flowers, put up a bird house and build hedgehog homes.

Our Green School committee consists of students from 1st to 6th class and is co-ordinated by Ms. Masterson. The committee meet regularly to plan, discuss and organise actions and events that will help us to improve biodiversity in our school.

Biodiversity Action Day 24/02/23
Last Friday, we held our Action Day where we all went out to carry out some work in our school garden. The parents and children all worked very hard to bring in lots of materials to help complete our garden.

Junior and Senior Infant children learned all about hedgehogs and made their own hedgehogs using clay in preparation for the new hedgehog homes that are added to the garden.

First and Second Class children carried out a study on birds and examined the needs of birds. They then made their own bird feeders and brought out the bird house to the garden.

Third and Fourth Class children investigated mini beasts and created a new bug hotel, arranging plant pots, piping, wood, bamboo sticks, pine cones, ivy and lots more foliage for the bugs to feel at home in their new habitat. They also made their own bugs using egg cartons and a selection of art materials.

Fifth and Sixth class had previously painted tyres and they brought them out to the garden so that we can all plant our flowers in them in the coming weeks. They learned about pollination and then drew a selection of Irish flowers.

                             Travel Flag 2018- 2020
Since September 2018, we have been striving to attain our fourth Green Flag. The theme for this is Travel Awareness.  All pupils and classes have been taking special measures to try and reduce the amount of traffic coming to and from school each day, by carpooling, park and stride,  walking and cycling (where possible) and taking the bus.  We have also been analysing Food Miles, and how many miles the food we eat daily has travelled to reach us.  By trying to buy more locally and reducing traffic, we hope to reduce our carbon footprint, save more energy and see a reduction in fossil fuels being admitted into the atmosphere.

During our curriculum work for Travel  Flag we organised a  WOW - Walk on  Wednesday- where, students and  staff walked  to  school and ditched cars and  even the   school bus- One arrival to  school,  the children had some breakfast!
This was  a really enjoyable morning.

Our hard working Committee has just submitted our application to achieve our Travel Flag.
