The past few weeks we have been busy in 3rd and 4th class learning about the life cycle of the Frog. As a follow up to this lesson we decided to do some STEAM projects. We made the tadpole in Lego WeDo2 and then turned it into a moving animated frog.
We also made the life cycle of the frog on scratch, An interactive coding representation of what we learned. Here are some pictures of us at work. Stem projectAs part of code week 2018 we made some Led lights. These lights will be sure to come in handy Trick or treating on Halloween night. Check us out creating spooky faces with our lights 😊

Following a list of instructions and step by step guides we made Fruit smoothies for the whole class with help from everyone.
In art class recently we have been focusing on Halloween Art ideas. A few weeks ago we made Picassco inspired Frankenstien faces. We looked at the technique Picassco used to paint his portraits and we came up with our own ideas. Here are some of our portraits of Frankenstien.
It is with a heavy heart that we said Goodybye this week to our principal Mr. Kevin Foley. Mr foley has been teaching and principal in lacken for over 31 years, teaching both present staff members Ms McKiernan and Ms Crowe. In honour of Mr Foleys retirement, we held 2 days of celebrations in the school. On Thursday 21st June, the school staff and pupils, held a prayer service and assembly followed by a barbecue, in which all parents, past and present, community members were invited to attend. Children shared some of their memories of Master Foley, and presented him with a small gift from all the pupils of Lacken national School. Mr Foley also planted a cherry blossom tree in front of the school as a constant reminder of all he has done for the school and community. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, enjoyed by both pupils, staff and parents.
On Friday 22nd of June there was a small presentation made to Mr Foley on behalf of the Board Of Managment, Parents Assocaition, staff and members of the community. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this presentation and helped out in any way. We would like to wish Master Foley all the best in his retirement. He will be missed but I'm sure he will always be a familiar face around Lacken N.S. On friday June 8th 3rd to 6th classes went on our Senior School tour to Croke Park and the Viking Splash tour in Dublin city. Departing at 8am , we arrived at croke park around 10am. Some of the senior classes got to walk the sky walk, while the other group got a tour of Croke Park and its museum. The views from the sky walk on top of the Cusack building were breathtaking and we got a chance to see sights all round the city. After a quick lunch break, we took the bus to the Viking Splash Tour. We had lots of fun and even managed to stay dry as the tour continued onto the water. We arrived home , tired and very happy at the great day we had. Here are some pictures from the day.
Recently, We focused a scheme of work on Ancient Egypt. We really enjoyed learning all about the Ancient Egyptians and how they mummified their dead, their traditions, gods and beliefs. Through other subjects like visual arts, we designed and created ancient Egyptian death masks, landscapes and mummies. We also had to research and present a project on the Ancient Egyptians in class. Here are some pictures from our Ancient Egypt case studies and presentations.
